This little booklet was based on Der Struwwelpeter, an original book by Heinrich Hoffmann from 1845. The project was created at the University of Fine Arts in Poznan as part of my graphic design faculty. This book is interesting for several reasons. Firstly, The Golden Wand is one of the earliest children’s books to combine visual and verbal narrative and is considered a precursor to the comic books. Secondly, the exceptionally intelligent and witty stories can be a real challenge for the illustrators. Each one is a rhythmic story with a clear moral that shows the unfortunate consequences of children’s disobedience. My take on the subject was to capture the essence of each story in a very minimalistic manner so they can funcion as a stand-alone posters. I studied the black and white areas intersecting each other, strong lines, and at the same same trying to play with form, double meaning of each image and hidden messages.[1]
